What are Apple still insisting on if they don't switch to the type-c interface this year

2021-03-04

Apple's persistence in certain details is well known. The bangs design that has appeared since iPhone X has been preserved until the iPhone 12 series; If it weren't for the re adoption of the square design from the iPhone 4 era on the iPhone 12 series, Apple's aesthetic fatigue would have been even more severe for users - after all, sometimes "shell swapping" cannot solve the problem of appearance.

Another point that is highly criticized by users is that Apple seems to have no intention of converting the existing iPhone's lighting interface to a type-c interface.

Tian Feng International industry analyst Guo Mingyi stated in a recent report that Apple will retain the Lightning connector on the iPhone for the "foreseeable future" and has no intention of switching to USB C.

This wave is called 'not forgetting one's original intention'.

In fact, before the release of the new iPhone products every year, there are only a few points that are most concerned by the industry and consumers: Is the screen Refresh rate high? Does it support fast charging? Has the battery capacity increased?

As Android models gradually move closer to the type-c interface, more and more consumers are turning their attention to the iPhone - when will you switch interfaces?

However, Apple's attitude towards consumers' pain points and needs has always been confusing, and it is clear that Apple has its own considerations regarding whether to replace interfaces.

In 2012, Apple officially released the lighting interface and installed it on the iPhone 5 of that year, which also gave users the first experience of plugging and unplugging power cords in and out.

Since then, the lighting interface has become standard on iPhone models, while Android models that support the type-c interface only appeared two years later in 2014 and became popular the following year in 2015.

From the actual user experience and physical characteristics, today's lighting has fallen behind type-c.

The type-c interface supports the highest 3A current and a maximum power of 100W, while the lighting interface currently only has a maximum of 20W, and the charging speed cannot be compared;

On the other hand, most type-cs already support 10Gbit/s USB 3.1, and the transmission rate of the Lightning interface is still at 5Gbit/s USB 2.0 a few years ago, which is a bit insufficient.

Oh, by the way, although Apple has made some progress in wireless earphones, during the period when the 3.5mm headphone jack was just removed, there were many complaints from Apple fans. After all, Lightning does not support analog audio output, and if you want to use wired earphones, you still need to install an adapter (which is now the same).

Although there have been many voices mentioning the interface issue, Apple seems to have been very resolute.

For Apple, maintaining an ecological closed-loop is a necessary operation, and using its own interface is naturally reasonable.

But this explanation is not comprehensive, as Apple is not a device that does not use type-c button release.

IPad Pro, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iPad Air, many Apple ecosystem products have embraced the type-c interface. Why is the iPhone so slow to switch?

Guo Mingyi pointed out in a recent report that although the industry has taken a big step towards the USB C interface, "Apple will not use it as a replacement for the Lightning connector on the iPhone 13 or any iPhone model at the moment

In another explanation, Guo Minghui explained that Apple is unwilling to use type-c because it is a free open standard.

At the same time, the consideration of waterproof specifications for iPhone devices is also an important reason for Apple's refusal to switch to type-c. The waterproof performance and safety of the type-c interface are indeed lower than those of lightning and MagSafe wireless charging technology.

Admittedly, type-C is flexible and open, which is also a double-edged sword. Once encountering hacker attacks, the scope of influence will be very wide, which is clearly unacceptable to Apple.

In addition, if the iPhone is converted to a type-c interface this year, it will result in a large number of redundant accessories for devices such as entry-level iPads, iPad mini, AirPods, etc. These accessories will not be widely used on any flagship product.

Therefore, switching the interface on the iPhone to USB C is likely to affect more Apple products, and this possibility will be more firm, rather than forcing Apple to accelerate the process of all series of interfaceless devices.

But one thing needs to be clear: Apple's current main promotion of MagSafe is not perfect, and there may be some or other issues in the specific use process.

I think there is a future trend towards interface free devices, but it is too early to hastily implement them. It is not a wise choice.

Maintaining the status quo is sometimes more effective than radical reform. It is also very important that Apple can strictly regulate the quality of lighting cables and accessories through its MFi program.

The full name of MFi certification is "Made for iPhone/iPad", which is a trademark usage license issued by Apple for external accessories produced by its authorized accessory manufacturers.

With MFi, Apple has gained significant revenue because third-party manufacturers must pay significant commissions to Apple to manufacture Lightning cables or accessories, which also require strict certification. Where is the reason why money is not earned?

Overall, the benefits of Apple choosing to continue with the lighting interface are much higher than transitioning to the type-c interface, and the Apple ecosystem is already very well-established. Using the lighting interface internally will not encounter any problems, and the main inconvenience will mostly come from external sources.

From the perspective of the company's future plans, the iPhone series will still coexist with the lighting interface for a period of time, and Apple has shown its ambition to skip type-c and directly enter the era of no interface.

But at present, it still takes a few years, and as for the future, let's wait and see.
