Five Disadvantages to Overcome in Designing Type-C Interface Schemes

2021-02-02

Among the new phones released in the second half of this year, the proportion of phones that use the USB type-C interface and traditional micro USB interface is approximately half to half. Most of the mobile phones using type-c interface are domestic ones, while the old mobile phone manufacturers such as Samsung, Motorola and Sony still use the traditional micro usb interface, which means that the industry analysis that type-c will explode in the second half of this year did not show.

At first glance, Type-C does have many advantages that micro USB does not have, such as being able to plug and unplug without distinguishing between the front and back, and significantly improving transmission speed and charging speed. But large-scale popularization of type-C may take some time, as it is not flawless and there are still many obstacles for ordinary consumers.

Type-C does not necessarily mean faster charging speed. As we mentioned earlier, type-C can provide faster charging speed, which is not wrong, but this is only true for type-C that meets the USB 3.1 standard. USB 3.1 supports the USB-PD (Power Delivery) power supply standard, with a maximum power supply of up to 100 watts (W), and a significant improvement in charging speed. However, for Type-C interface phones that are only based on the USB 2.0 standard, it does not support true fast charging. The most obvious example is one plus two. In fact, we have not yet encountered Type-C phones that truly support fast charging.

Type-c does not necessarily mean faster data transmission. Similarly, type-c supports faster data transmission speeds and also refers to interfaces that comply with the USB 3.1 standard. Nowadays, many devices that use the type-c interface do not adopt the USB 3.1 standard, only their appearance has changed. Moreover, even if your Type-C is the standard USB 3.1 interface, most computers and other devices on the market still use the USB 2.0 interface standard as the mainstream. The transmission speed cannot be faster.

Type-C is not compatible with existing micro USB devices. Imagine if you are using a phone with a Type-C interface and happen to forget to bring a data cable and charger while on a business trip. When you want to borrow from someone around you, you realize that they don't have such a data cable at all. Do you feel like crying without tears. At the same time, you might originally have a bunch of micro USB interface accessories and devices, but when you switch to using type-c, you will find that these devices seem to have become a pile of garbage.

We all say that the spare parts of type-c are expensive, and the spare parts of type-c are also expensive. We take the example of Apple's official MacBook specific design, which can realize hdmi motherboard, standard usb 3.1 and usb c output us-c AV video converter through the usb c interface. Through it, MacBook can be connected to an external display with 4K/60Hz or 1080P/30Hz, and also serve as a general usb device, with external power supply.

Due to its openness and flexibility, type-c is more susceptible to large-scale attacks, especially when facing BadUSB vulnerabilities. Hackers can avoid the data read area and store malicious code in the firmware storage area of the USB device controller, allowing users to infect electronic devices with malicious code before discovering it. The most frightening thing is that even if we find that our device is infected with BadUSB, we can't clear the code by relying on ordinary Antivirus software software or formatting operations, and security experts say that it is very unlikely that we want to fix the BadUSB vulnerability. However, when using the USB interface, it is necessary to follow the USB standard, which lays a certain hidden danger that all manufacturers cannot avoid.
